What's Popular In Greece

  • Currency: Euro(EUR)
  • Language: Greek

Greece is a mountainous peninsula located on the eastern side of the Mediterranean Sea. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple.

Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos. Due to the many islands, in the Aegean and the Ionian Sea, Greece has the longest coastline in Europe and the fifth longest coastline in the world.

What to Do

Find Your Perfect Beach
With 8,498 miles of coastline, you are never too far away from a pristine beach in Greece. In fact, 380 of Greece’s beaches boast Blue Flag status for their cleanliness. Greeks spend plenty of time at the seaside to escape the summer heat and their social life in the hotter months is closely intertwined with beach activities. Follow the locals to the more popular seafronts or hire a boat to discover your own private bay.

Step Back to the Middle Ages
Enter this rock-island fortress town from its unique single entrance (moni emvasia, according to the Byzantines) and you are suddenly transported five centuries back in time to the clashes between the Byzantine empire and the Franks. This is a cozy town where everything still needs to be brought in through the gate via donkeys, while the narrow alleyways, restored buildings, old ruins, and dramatic views across the bay will ignite your imagination.

Explore the Acropolis
Every city-state in ancient Greece had an acropolis, a fortress high up on a hill to keep hostile visitors at bay. But there is only one Acropolis, built-in 5 B.C. in Athens. It is rightly considered as the jewel of the Athenian civilization, the pinnacle of Classical beauty, and the epitome of human accomplishment in the ancient world.

Watch the Sunset in Santorini
The towns of Fira and Ia are perched along the top of the island and provide some spectacular and wildly popular sunset-watching opportunities across the bay. With its seriously romantic backdrop, it’s no wonder that Santorini is such a popular wedding destination.

Indulge in Low-Key Elegance
With one of the prettiest towns in Greece, Folegandros is the archetypal Cycladic island. Still largely untouched by tourism, it has however been coined as the “new” Santorini. Now is the perfect time to roam about its slate-paved streets and take in the infinite views beyond the whitewashed cubic houses and blue church domes.

Go Back in Time on Mykonos
Greece's most glamorous island destination is Mykonos. After-dark activities center on Mykonos Town, noted for its chic boutique hotels, classy seafood restaurants, and live music venues. Other attractions include Paraportiani (a whitewashed church in Mykonos Town) and numerous sandy beaches along the island's south coast (served both by bus and taxi-boat from Mykonos Town). The island is particularly popular with international celebrities.

Transportation

Buses (Ktel)
The KTEL buses are green in color and connect Athens to many towns of the mainland. Itineraries are regular and tickets can be bought just before the trip, as KTEL buses do not have an online booking system. It is the most popular way of transportation in mainland Greece.

Trains
The most popular train route in Greece is from Athens to Thessaloniki. The northern and central Greece is also well-served by the rail network. However, trains in Greece are not that popular as suburban KTEL buses, although in most cases the train fare is cheaper than the bus ticket. Trains are not the best transportation way as the infrastructures are old and trains are slow.

Greek ferries
The most popular transportation means to go from Athens to the Greek islands is by ferry. It is the easiest way even if many flights are available to reach the islands. Although Piraeus is the central port of Athens, many ferries also depart from the ports of Rafina and Lavrion. The majority of ferries in Greece are modern and offer a convenient trip.

Cars and car rental
Cars are the best and most secure way of transportation in Greece when you are in a specific location and want to get around. There are car rental agencies in the most popular places in Greece and the Greek islands. The main road networks in Greece are modern and in a good state, but the regional roads need attention as they are usually narrow and winding.

Flights
The most popular way of transport to Greece is, of course, the plane. The International Airport of Athens El. Venizelos serves most flights from abroad and from there tourists go by another plane or ferry to the islands. In tourist season, there are also charter flights from abroad directly to the islands or few airports in the mainland.
